I'm a total noob when it comes to playing cards, so call me ignorant, but what is the big deal about stuff like the Bycicle ones and the others found on KS!? Like aren't they just some deck though up and made by some random person!? What's so special about them!?
A few of the KS projects are exciting, the others not so much. It generally has to do with the artwork as playing cards have, in recent years, become a medium of art for many collectors as well as deck artists. The artwork in the ones that do take off ie. Uusi, Jackson Robinson's Federal 52 and Independence are very much a step above the mass-produced Bicycle decks as well as other customs offered in the market.
This combined with limited editions, fancy tuckboxes and other bells and whistles can contribute to the success of a certain Kickstarter project.
This is a particularly interesting one which ended a few months ago and is produced by artist Dale Mathis:
