For the 150th anniversary of Australian Rules Football in 2008 the AFL commissioned the Herald Sun’s chief football writer Mike Sheehan to compile a list of the 50 greatest players to ever play the game. A controversial list at the time, in the first of a series of articles we have picked the best trading card for each of the players in that list. Lets take a look at numbers 41 to 45
45. Len Thompson
Len is another legend who combined size with his athletic ability. After initially being rejected by Essendon he went on to play 270 games with Collingwood and played out his career at South Melbourne and Fitzroy. He was named in Collingwood’s team of the century and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998. Not a hard choice here. This case card signature is from 2007 Supreme set which was released not long before his untimely death.

44. Francis Bourke
St Francis as he was known was one of the toughest players in the game having once played half a game with a broken leg. He played his entire career at Richmond and was a 5 time premiership player in the clubs most successful era. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002 and was named in the AFL’s Team of the Century. This card is one of this rarest – the 1974 Kellogg’s Footy Star Stickers.

43. Michael Tuck
Michael won an amazing Premierships with Hawthorn. He hold the record for most AFL games played (426), most final games (39), most grand final appearances (11) and the most premiership wins (7). He was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in 1996. This card is from the 1986 Scanlens set is our pick due to fantastic photography in this card. Select could learn a lot about how to make a base card with this set.

42. Ben Cousins
A flawed personality but an undeniable football talent. During his 11 years at West Coast he was a premiership winner, won a Brownlow and a MVP award. He was sacked from West Coast in 2007 before renewing and finally ending his career at Richmond. We could not go past this signature card from his rookie year in 1997 Select Ultimate Collection. These were the precursor to the now famous draft pick signatures.

41. Doug Wade
One of the most prolific goal scorers in AFL history, Wade is one of only 5 players to have over 1,000 career goals post WW2 (Coventry, Ablett, Dunstall and Lockett being the other 4). He won 2 premierships with Geelong and North Melbourne and 4 Coleman Medals during his career. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1996. This card is from the 1969 Scanlens set. We love it! Not often you have 3 players on one card (2 of them Hall of Famers) and it’s also a very interest choice of logo!
